Flexible work arrangements combat the skills squeeze
One in four high technology companies in Australia is looking to introduce flexible working arrangements into their companies to combat the skills squeeze.
Results from the latest Survey of Salaries and Remuneration Packaging in the Australian ICT Industry, released by the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), reveals that 11 per cent of responding organisations are using flexible work arrangements as an attraction and retention tool. A further 25 per cent of companies surveyed may introduce flexible work arrangements within the next six months.
“In a tight labour market, retention of talent continues to be a primary focus for high technology companies in Australia,” says AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Sheryle Moon.
“While it may seem that the war for talent has picked up the pace, average salary increases over the August 2006–August survey period have increased by 5.1 percent. When compared with the 5.0 per cent increase over the previous survey period, we can be reassured that the ICT jobs market remains relatively stable,” Ms Moon says.

Companies urged to get a Second Life
Speaking at the annual AIIA Board of Directors dinner in Canberra last Wednesday night, AIIA's CEO, Sheryle Moon, told the audience that Second Life was not just a game for spotty youth and that AIIA's Second Life presence reflects the Association's desire to educate Australian businesses - especially SMEs - about the environment's vast potential to reshape the way they interact with customers.
"Gartner predicts that by 2010 80 per cent of active Internet users will have a Second Life – even if it is not in Second Life. That’s only three years away," Ms Moon said.

Expressions of interest in Legal Forum Chair position
After several years as AIIA’s Legal Forum Chair, Peter Preller, Corporate Counsel with Optus is stepping down from the position owing to new work and life directions.
Under Peter’s chair, the Legal Forum has helped improve several standard government contracts, saving members significant time and cost – and ensured that the Legal Forum has been a source of timely information and provided ICT lawyers with a great opportunity to network with like minded souls. Our thanks to Peter for his enthusiasm, expertise and being a calm hand at the helm.
