AIIA’s model framework for computer recycling receives positive support at Minister’s Industry roundtable
AIIA and a dedicated group of its environmentally focused hardware manufacturing members were invited to meet on Tuesday 13 June with Minister Ian Campbell, Minister for the Environment and Heritage, and government officials to discuss and develop a national scheme for the recycling of computer equipment.
AIIA’s Environmental Special Interest Group - which is represented by members from leading Hardware manufacturers - presented a model framework for discussion to the Minister, senior government officials, and other hardware manufacturers not part of AIIA’s membership.
Earlier, government and industry had agreed on a broad set of government objectives and key industry principles for product stewardship arrangements in relation to the recycling of computer equipment in Australia.
While it was acknowledged more time needs to be spent in a collaborative approach to work thought the details of the model, the industry’s proposal as presented was well received by the Minister and government officials alike.
“Yesterday’s meeting was a major step forward and we are very pleased that the Minister was clearly encouraged by the efforts we have made to drive a whole of industry solution,” commented James McAdam, General Manager of Strategy and Policy Services, AIIA.
“While we acknowledge the Government’s claims that the devil will be in the detail, we are encouraged by the collegiate response that the government has shown to working with the industry to test our models,” he added.
Over the past 12 months, AIIA has submitted a major proposal to the Environment Protection and Heritage Council (EPHC) - comprising state and federal environment ministers - which addressed the issue of ‘computer take-back and recycling’ in Australia. The proposal was followed by two subsequent revisions. The presentation made on June 13 was a further attempt by AIIA to address concerns expressed by key government stakeholders.
AIIA is pleased that the Minister was clearly encouraged by the current documentation and further, by the effort that AIIA has made on behalf of the ICT industry and government to put forward another proposal that seeks to address such a key, whole-of-industry solution.
Industry and Government representatives are scheduled to meet again in Sydney on 29 June 2006 to further progress the proposal.

AGIMO update

The month of June has seen AIIA very focussed on ensuring that the terms and conditions upon which this business is done are acceptable to suppliers. AIIA has provided reams of comments on new standard contracts; provided detailed input on a significant new tender; continues to be involved in discussions with various governments on key contracting issues; and is beginning to turn up the dialogue on “common contracting”.
