The AIIA will soon be holding its annual elections, both for State Committees and for the AIIA National Board. Voting in these elections is open to all full financial members of the AIIA, and all members are encouraged to take part in the elections by voting or standing for an elected position. The AIIA National Board and State Committees play a vital role in setting the strategic objectives of your Association. The AIIA National Board interacts at a very high level with major decision makers across Australia. As a result the Board is only open to CEO membership. Representatives for both the AIIA National Board and State Committees are voted for directly by the membership. Only the representatives of full financial member companies of the AIIA at the close of the roll can stand and vote. There are a number of open positions on the AIIA National Board this year up for re-election this year; having AIIA Board directors come up for election every year ensures continuity and succession.
Digital Economy Workshops The Australian Government recently hosted a Digital Economy Workshop series, held around the country from 12 – 22 August; AIIA represented members and the technology industry. Three workshops were held covering the themes of Capability, Content and Confidence. The workshops provided Government and industry with the opportunity to collaborate on the development of key strategies to optimise the development of Australia’s digital economy. They represent a one-off opportunity for the ICT sector to engage with the formulation of policy and relationships central to the future of the technology industry. Each workshop resulted in detailed papers outlining current trends, aspirations, priorities, and short-term strategies in key areas of the digital economy. Proposals under consideration include regular consultative forums between Government, business, industry groups and research bodies to ensure the development of relevant strategies at the national level. Skills, entrepreneurship, innovation and the coordination of government and business were identified as priorities for the development of policy related to the future of the digital economy in Australia. The workshops culminated in a forum held in Melbourne on 10 September hosted by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy. AIIA CEO Ian Birks addressed the forum and provided detailed feedback on some of the most pressing issues, including: the ongoing development of skills and digital literacy across the workforce and wider community; continuing to establish a strong and vibrant ICT sector, both through policy formulation and the dynamic of the sector itself; and, the importance of a collaboration between government and business in policy development and in promoting the value of the digital economy in Australia. Arising from the forum, the Minister's Department will develop a 'futures plan,' which will form the basis of a blueprint for the digital economy going forward. The presentation accompanied two panel discussions, examining the review, its implications for the ICT industry and wider issues relating to the role of ICT in innovation. Venturousaustralia provides a well-researched scorecard that shows Australia slipping dangerously behind international competition in the innovation stakes. In his speech at the event, Dr Cutler said, “this is a depressing scorecard, and one that should serve as a wake-up call.” Read more 2008 Daylight Savings Time arrangements
October 5 will be the start of DST for Tasmania, Victoria, ACT, NSW, SA and WA. This will be a long weekend for many of these states and as a result there is a concern about ensuring business is ready. In the past some businesses have forgotten about DST or have thought that they didn’t need to make any changes because they did last year, only to find the transition times had changed - again. ACEC’08 is being hosted by the Computer Education Group of the ACT in partnership with the association of Catholic and Independent Teacher Librarians. ACEC attracts delegates from all education sectors (tertiary, VET and schools) who have an interest in the use of ICT in education. This year will be the first time all those Australian States that participate in Daylight Saving time will transition to the start of DST at the same time. Over the past three years there have been changes in when and which states participated.
