Leaders of 'the clever country' dragging the chain on technology take-up

Australian politicians are overlooking technology as a key tool in the race to this year’s federal election, says AIIA.

“Our politicians are fighting for this election with one hand tied behind their backs,” said AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer Sheryle Moon.  “If we compare our country’s leaders with their peers in the US, they really are dragging the chain.  The American campaign has been dubbed ‘The YouTube election’ due to the enormous traffic generated by candidates and commentators.

“On one hand we have the Clintons posting a Sopranos-style satire and Barack Obama TV on YouTube grabbing international headlines, and until this week the best Australia has to offer is a few very tame blogs.  We congratulate those politicians who have just joined MySpace in an official capacity – Ministers Turnbull and Hockey and key Opposition spokespeople Rudd, Gillard, Garrett, Swan and Conroy.

“We reviewed the online presence of some of the key players in the Australian election race and found they’re just not using common technologies to connect with their electorates.  This is surprising given this will be a make-or-break election for both sides of politics.  If we are to continue calling Australia the clever country it’s time politicians lead by example.

“While Australians are joining Second Life, YouTube and MySpace in droves and creating blogs in their thousands, many of our political leaders are dragging their feet.  I’d urge them to switch on and discover new ways of communicating with voters,” Ms Moon said.

AIIA searched online (as interested voters would do) for the online presence of PM John Howard, Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd, Deputy PM Mark Vaile, Deputy Opposition Leader Julia Gillard, Treasurer Peter Costello, Opposition Spokesperson on Treasury Wayne Swan, Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Opposition Spokesperson on Environment Peter Garrett, Aboriginal Affairs Minister Mal Brough, Opposition Spokesperson for Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin, Workplace Relations Minister Joe Hockey, Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts Helen Coonan and Opposition Spokesperson for Communications and Information Technology Stephen Conroy.  You'll find the results on AIIA's website.

“It’s good to see some of our pollies entering a new arena, while others are sticking with what they know, which is a shame,” said Ms Moon.  “The beauty of these new technologies is their power to inject real energy into electioneering.  There’s plenty of scope for humour, creativity, impassioned debate and originality.  And let’s face it – couldn’t we all do with a little of that?”
