Comment from the Chairman: Be Seen at CeBIT Australia
by: John Price
From 24-26 May 2005, Australasia’s largest and most successful ICT exhibition will be staged at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour.
CeBIT Australia is now in its fifth year, and is expected to attract some of the world’s biggest brand names and more visitors than ever before.
According to Jackie Taranto, Managing Director of Hannover Fairs Australia (the event organisers) CeBIT Australia is growing at a rate of about 20 percent each year, both in exhibitor and visitor numbers. “This year we increase from 3 halls to 4 and will have 600 exhibitors, up 80 on last year. We are forecasting 30,000 visitors, up 5,000 on last year,” she says.
“The really exciting thing about CeBIT Australia is the increasing role it is playing in promoting Australia and its ICT industry to a global audience. As one of only four versions of CeBIT around the world, CeBIT Australia attracts a bigger international audience each year. This year almost 20% of the exhibition space is taken by 21 overseas countries and we have high-level visitor delegations coming from another seven.”
This makes CeBIT Australia a springboard to Asia – the largest exhibiting nation is China followed by Taiwan. It really is the leading platform for ICT companies to explore opportunities in new-world markets.
Perhaps most importantly, CeBIT Australia is the meeting-point of all the top-decision makers in ICT. More than 83% of last year’s visitors were directly responsible for important investment decisions.
AIIA is proud to be the host association of CeBIT Australia. AIIA’s Software Showcase is a feature of the trade show, providing up to 150 software development companies from around Australia with the opportunity to present their products and solutions to the large CeBIT Australia audience. The Showcase is also a conduit for partnerships between investors and Australia’s up-and-coming software innovators.
As part of CeBIT Australia, AIIA will roll out the red carpet on 25 May for the ICT industry’s ‘night of nights’. The iAwards rewards and recognises the most outstanding ICT innovation of the year. As everyone who attended last year’s sell-out event will affirm, the iAwards offers as much glitz and glamour as the Oscars. The list of attendees is sure to read like a ‘Who’s Who’ of the Australian ICT industry.
The iAwards finalists were announced last week at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, and I congratulate each company on their stellar efforts and wish them luck on the big night.
I encourage AIIA member companies to exhibit at CeBIT Australia. For more information on how your company can be involved, contact Anna Peacock on (02) 9282 7520.
See you at CeBIT Australia!

DEWR ICT Skills Shortage Survey April/May 2005
The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) will shortly be commencing this year’s ICT Skills Shortage survey. DEWR researchers will be contacting employers and recruitment agencies by phone, asking them to identify ICT skill specialisations and the degree of difficulty in filling vacant positions.
Many AIIA member companies will be contacted shortly to participate in the survey, which will be completed by the end of May. DEWR has asked AIIA to encourage member companies to co-operate, as the information gathered is valuable for assessing the status of ICT skills in Australia.
