Representatives from AIIA’s NSW Healthcare Special Interest Group were able to expand their horizon recently with a briefing in a major federal government health initiative, HealthConnect.
Dr Brian Richards, the First Assistant Secretary and National Director for the e-Health Implementation Group in the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing briefed the group on progress in the HealthConnect Implementation Strategy and Broadband for Health.
Dr Richards told the group that information and communication technologies offered substantial potential to improve patient health outcomes and health system performance.
He said that under the HealthConnect Implementation Strategy, the Australian Government would provide $128 million over four years towards the implementation of the national health information network, HealthConnect, as a major platform for reforming health care delivery in Australia.
The Implementation Strategy positions HealthConnect as a key enabler for health care reform by supporting improved availability of information.
A significant component of the Strategy, Broadband for Health Program (BFHP), is a $35 million undertaking to provide broadband internet access to GPs, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) as well as eligible health care organisations.
