How ICT can capture the imaginations of young people

Rob Durie

AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Rob Durie, explores how the ICT industry can capture the imaginations of young people to ensure it has the necessary skills for the future.

There has been a lot of talk in recent months about whether or not there is an ICT skills crisis. I confess I am not very comfortable with the terms ‘skills shortage’ and ‘skills crisis’. I do not find the debate constructive. It also gives me a strong feeling of déjà vu. These words can be useful to initiate urgent action. But the lesson of the past is they do not serve us well in setting up structures and programs to move the skills issue forward.

Take the panic out of choosing an overseas partner

AustradeSelecting a local partner in your chosen overseas market is an important step for an Australian exporter. Forming the right alliances can give you access to advice, experience, local knowledge, customer contacts and resources far beyond the reach of your own company. However, it is important to know what to look for in a partner, understand the regional factors that can impact your decision and take the right approach to making and maintaining these strategic relationships. 11 July: Canberra - Federal Government ‘SourceIT’ Standard Contracts Explained

Sparke Helmore and AIIA would like to extend an invitation to join guest speaker Mike Pym, of Sparke Helmore Lawyers, at a seminar to discuss the new Federal Government contracts.

On May 31 2006, the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) released three new draft model contracts in the ‘SourceIT’ series.

These contracts are to become standard contracts for the supply of software, software support, software related installation and implementation, hardware acquisition and support, and consulting services in Federal Government Departments and Agencies. Although they are intended to be used for 'simple' transactions, they could easily be used for major acquisitions and significant application development projects.

12 July: Adelaide - The Fermentation Partnership – Grapes and ICT

CIO of McGuigan Simeon Wines, Ryan Klose will speak to this ICT industry meeting on the challenges being faced by the wine industry and the solutions that the ICT industry offers to help the wine industry to grow.

From “spray diaries” and vineyard maturity analyses, through the harvest and wine blend management, ICT is a key contributor to this major wine company.

Why is ICT important to this company?

Because management is reliant on the disciplines provided by ICT – adherence to compliance standards, cost management and control, stock control, sales and sales growth. Compliance has the additional imperative of requiring branded labels and styles to achieve a level of consistency to satisfy consumer’s palates and price point dictates.

This special event will be rounded off, most appropriately, with a wine tasting of red and white wines selected from the McGuigan range.

Date: Wednesday, 12 July 2006
Time: 4.00 pm for 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm
Venue: National Wine Centre of Australia, cnr of Hackney and Botanic Roads, Adelaide
Cost: Members and government @ $50.00, non-members @ $80.00

About Ryan Klose
Ryan Klose is the Chief Information Officer of McGuigan Simeon Wines. Ryan has an extensive background in the wine industry. Raised in the Barossa Valley and having spent many ‘active’ years in family vineyards, Ryan has gained much experience working with various wine companies of varying size and demographic focus and has spent brief periods consulting internationally within the US.

Prior to his appointment with McGuigan Simeon Wines, Ryan owned and operated his own consulting firm which focused on IT and IS and on the mergers and acquisitions which have occurred over the past 10 years.

Dealing with the internal operational, technology, systems and change management of wine companies, Ryan has spear-headed many wine organisations that have floated on the ASX as public companies - including Banksia Wine (now Lion Nathan), Xanadu Wines, Normans Wines, Evans & Tate Wines and McGuigan Simeon Wines.

Ryan’s portfolio continues to ‘spill over’ into a base that has included Yalumba Wines, Plantagenet Wines (WA), Goundrey Wines (WA), Boars Rock Winery group and Grant Burge Wines.

Today, Ryan continues to drive new and innovative technologies and disciplines within the wine industry – he pioneered the early adoption of bulk wine trading on the Internet; has acted as a chief advisor to a new wine management system from the US; has consulted with CSIRO on projects in the winery/vineyard space; and is active in the innovation of new initiatives and technologies in the business of winemaking.

The merger four years ago of Brian McGuigan Wines and Simeon Wines has resulted in a fully integrated wine company with interests in vineyards, wine production, marketing and distribution – and state of the art ICT software, hardware and management resources. It is also the largest Australian-owned wine company. McGuigan Simeon Wines has company vineyards over 13,000 acres, crushes over 250,000 tonnes of grapes from more than 800 growers each year, has stocks in management exceeding $200 million at 6 sites and has an annual turnover of approximately $400M.

20 July: Melbourne - VIC CIO Forum

The key technological investments for the future –
insight and commentary from three ICT CIOs

What can CIOs from Alinta, Sensis, and CSL tell your company about technological investments in 2006 - 2007?

According to Gartner research*, in 2006 Australian CIOs are focused on:

  • Improving, integrating and innovating business processes (not automating),
  • Expanding the quality and use of intelligence in processes, products and services,
  • A business view of IT: providing services that support enterprise competitiveness (bottom line profitability), and
  • Controlling enterprise-wide operating costs/budgets

In contrast, security breaches, disruptions to the business and data protection and privacy have dropped down the list in importance.

On Thursday 20 July, three leading CIOs will share their insights on the challenges facing their organisations and the role technology plays today and in the future.

Our specialist speakers are:

  • Fadi Rizk - CSL
  • Chris Stevens - Sensis
  • Cathy Bibby - Alinta

The Forum will be facilitated by Chris Gillies, a leading IT Governance consultant who has over 10 years experience as a director and more than 35 years experience in business management and information technology. Chris will explore how the key trends identified by Gartner relate to these CIOs’ organisations. She will also facilitate audience questions in an interactive session.
