How ICT can capture the imaginations of young people

AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Rob Durie, explores how the ICT industry can capture the imaginations of young people to ensure it has the necessary skills for the future.
There has been a lot of talk in recent months about whether or not there is an ICT skills crisis. I confess I am not very comfortable with the terms ‘skills shortage’ and ‘skills crisis’. I do not find the debate constructive. It also gives me a strong feeling of déjà vu. These words can be useful to initiate urgent action. But the lesson of the past is they do not serve us well in setting up structures and programs to move the skills issue forward. Read more |

AIIA and government work together to simplify SourceIT
AIIA has welcomed further commitment from the Australian Government to work with industry to improve the new range of simplified model contracts for frequent low risk transactions between ICT companies and the federal government.
As part of the Australian Government’s commitment to redevelop the ICT contracting framework, it has released a suite of draft model contracts (know as SourceIT model contracts), which have been designed to provide templates for government agencies to develop sound commercial agreements efficiently and effectively.
However, AIIA has some concerns with the draft contracts, says AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Rob Durie.
“The concept of SourceIT contracts is a very good one, as it simplifies arrangements for suppliers,” Mr Durie says. “However, there are still some issues to be resolved in terms of execution.
“AIIA has consulted with both the Special Minister of State, The Hon Gary Nairn and the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO), who have agreed to slow down the process and will continue to engage in dialogue with the ICT industry to ensure our concerns are appropriately dealt with.
“We are looking forward to working with our members and AGIMO to develop a fair and workable contract that both industry and government will want to use”, he continues.
The Australian Government ICT market is strategically important to ICT companies. Not only does it spend approximately $3 billion on ICT goods and services each year, but work with the government provides companies with internationally recognised reference sites and the opportunity to work on innovative ICT solutions.
“The ICT industry, as a whole, does have concerns with various aspects of the draft contracts but we look forward to working through these with AGIMO as part of the consultative process,” Mr Durie says.
“We believe that these contracts will be widely adopted and therefore successful only if they are regarded as fair and workable by both government and industry,” he concludes.

Take the panic out of choosing an overseas partner
Selecting a local partner in your chosen overseas market is an important step for an Australian exporter. Forming the right alliances can give you access to advice, experience, local knowledge, customer contacts and resources far beyond the reach of your own company. However, it is important to know what to look for in a partner, understand the regional factors that can impact your decision and take the right approach to making and maintaining these strategic relationships.
