How ICT can capture the imaginations of young people
AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Rob Durie, explores how the ICT industry can capture the imaginations of young people to ensure it has the necessary skills for the future.

Industry leadership will build ICT skills, says AIIA
AIIA will work with the Australian Computer Society (ACS) to lead and The Working Group report is part of the Government’s strategic approach to identify the skills needs of the ICT industry and provide that information to ICT professionals and students looking for opportunities. The Working Group analysed the current trends and potential developments of ICT technologies, the applications of technologies and their implications for the ICT workforce and its skills development. One of the major issues identified by the Working Group was the lack of public and private sector co-operation on many of the issues challenging the ICT industry. The Working Group recommends the formation of an industry leadership group to develop and facilitate improved ICT information and participation in ICT occupations and careers. AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Rob Durie, said that the Association endorses the recommendations of the ICT Skills Foresighting Working Group, which provide a real opportunity to make significant progress on key skills issues. “An important challenge will be for industry to show leadership and make sure we grasp this opportunity,” Mr Durie said. AIIA and the Australian Computer Society have agreed to be jointly responsible for leading and coordinating efforts to address ICT skills issues. In taking the initiatives forward, AIIA and ACS will be inclusive, involving all stakeholders including governments, industry and the education sector. "AIIA and ACS will be working on a broad front to follow up on the Working Group’s recommendations and also to address the issues identified at the recent ICT Skills Summit, especially improving the image of ICT as a career and identifying clear pathways from education to careers,” Mr Durie added. “Building and maintaining a world-class ICT workforce is necessary to meet the current and future needs of the economy. The ICT industry is currently worth 4.6 per cent of the nation’s GDP, and we must fight for our fair share of talent to ensure that Australia continues to enjoy strong productivity, economic and social benefits from ICT,” Mr Durie added.
