Going Green Expo
National Environment Day
On Thursday June 5 - World Environment Day - AIIA CEO Ian Birks formally opened the Going Green Expo in Melbourne. The Going Green Expo showcased easy ways that every Australian household and business can reduce their environmental footprint, and placed a strong emphasis on ICT and ICT related initiatives. The Expo was designed to accelerate awareness of environmental issues and demonstrate how going green - with modern technology and the latest innovations - is now easier than ever; over 150 companies participated.
AIIA and Sustainability Victoria hosted a stand at the EXPO for Byteback, a free computer take-back and recycling program being trailed in Victoria. Byteback was developed by Sustainability Victoria and AIIA along with ten supporting IT manufacturers (Apple, Canon, Dell, Epson, Fujitsu, Fuji-Xerox, HP, IBM, Lenovo, and Lexmark) to help people in Victoria dispose of unwanted computer equipment in a responsible manner. The Byteback program is providing a clear picture of the e-Waste stream and creating a good understanding of how a national computer take-back program can be deployed in the future. Better yet, Byteback is recycling up to 97% of a product that would otherwise be thrown in the tip!
Ian Birks concluded his speech by announcing that Byteback has now partnered with national office supplies retailer, Officeworks. As part of the trial, Byteback will open collection sites at two of the Officeworks megastores in Ballarat and Dandenong. More information about Byteback is available online. All AIIA members can get involved in Byteback – your company doesn’t have to be a hardware manufacturer to support the program. For enquiries contact Byteback Program Manager Josh Millen.
