457 Visa Review
Industry submission - contributions invited

The ICT sector remains the highest industry user of the 457 visa program, which has undergone significant change over the past twelve months. One important development is the Subclass 457 Integrity Review, announced on 14 April 2008. As part of this Review, AIIA is seeking expressions of interest from members interested in contributing to the Review; contact Bridget Larsen, General Manager AIIA Government Relations, if your organisation would like to be involved.

Recent changes to the 457 that you may like to consider include:

  • Changes to Minimum Salary Levels, which are increasing by 3.8 per cent from 1 August 2008.
  • 2007 changes to the 457 visa English language requirements, requiring most principal applicants for a 457 visa are required to have proficiency in English
  • improvements to 457 visa applications processing
  • current sponsorship requirements for employers of 457 visa holders.
  • 2007 Employer Sanction Legislation changes.

Brooke Thomas is AIIA’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship Immigration Outreach Officer, and is able to provide all AIIA members with advice and guidance on all migration matters, including 457 and other visa options. Brooke will shortly be providing all members with an update on the 457 visa program by regular mail, covering major changes from the past year. Brooke is primarily available to the AIIA on Fridays and can be contacted with queries via email or on 0434 078 554.
