Over 900 industry representatives turned out to hear Queensland Premier, the Hon. Anna Bligh MP, address a luncheon co-hosted by AIIA and ACS in Brisbane on Thursday June 26. The audience was rewarded with a commitment to Information Communication Technology (ICT) and the Premier's vision for its transformational role in both the Queensland economy and the culture of government. National ICT Careers’ week 2008 28 July to 2 August Momentum is gathering for the first National ICT Careers week, which begins on 28 July this year to showcase the career opportunities available to current graduates across the industry. Events are being held around the country by over 70 companies, industry bodies, education institutions, and government agencies under the Start Here, Go Anywhere banner. The Careers Week is sizing up to be a great opportunity to give students everywhere a genuine understanding of everything the industry has to offer. To get involved, register your event online and check out the range of activities already planned. Among them, the Victorian Information Technology Teachers Association will host an expo for Victorian students and parents on 2 August to meet with tertiary and industry groups to gain a better understanding of the available career options in ICT and how tertiary training in the field will become an increasingly important prerequisite in many forms of business. In NSW, the Northern Sydney Institute will be promoting Digi-Girls Robotics on July 29 and 30, a technical skills acceleration program for girls in Years 10–12. The majority of jobs in today’s workforce require a basic understanding of computers and industry technology; to increase awareness of the types of technology used in the workplace, the Digi-Girls program demonstrates the relevance and use of the equipment through hands-on training. And in South Australia on July 30, high-profile radio and television science commentator and author, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, will be hosted by the University of South Australia School of Computer and Information Science to talk about some of the great career opportunities in IT. Dr Karl’s presentation will examine the exponentially growing opportunities in IT, and how the contemporary workforce needs to be aware of these changes and adapt with them.  |  John Stockbridge awarded Australian Computer Society Fellowship Earlier this month AIIA National Treasurer John Stockbridge was awarded an Australian Computer Society Fellowship, recognising his distinguished contribution to the field of information and communications technology. John has a longstanding dedication to the industry in Australia and AIIA extends its congratulations on behalf of all members on fitting recognition. Read more AIIA submission to the Gershon Review AIIA made a detailed formal submission to the Independent Review of the Australian Government's Use of ICT (also known as the Gershon Review) on Friday 13 June, 2008. This Review has the potential to significantly change the environment in which the ICT industry does business with the Australian Government. AIIA devoted substantial effort to ensure that views representative of all members (including large multinational companies, major Australian organisations, SMEs and startups) were communicated to the Review; consequently, the submission was based on extensive industry consultation and feedback from members.
