Innovative Australian companies win at prestigious Asian region high tech awards
Two innovative Australian companies – one in Sydney and the other in Perth - have taken out a regional award for innovation in technology at this year’s Asia-Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) Summit. Sydney-based company Cargowise and Perth-based organisation ReadOn achieved success and swept all before them at the regional awards, which were designed to increase information and communications technology (ICT) awareness in the community and assist in bridging the Digital Divide across the APAC region.
Two other Australian companies, TrustDefender and a student project from the University of Tasmania were runners-up in their respective categories. Winners were announced at a gala dinner in Singapore last night.
“The APICTA awards are a platform that has pushed Aussie innovators into the Asia-Pacific spotlight,” says AIIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Sheryle Moon. “It’s wonderful to see Australian companies driving innovation on a global scale. Winning these awards will be a great validation for these companies and Australia, as they are acknowledged for their ICT contribution and impact on regional and international industries, and the AIIA is proud to be associated with them.”
Sydney-based Cargowise, who won an iAward for its supply chain logistics management solutions software, swept all before it in the General Applications category. Proudly Australian and globally competitive, Cargowise is an international logistics, freight forwarding and customs broking software developer. Cargowise provide a modular set of supply chain logistics management systems.
Winning in the Education and Training category, Perth-based company Read-On is a family business which started after they saw a need in special education software. The Mangano family developed an interactive software system that serves as a learning tool for people with reading difficulties. By combining research-based learning strategies with the latest text-to-speech tools and multimedia technology ReadOn builds skill and self-reliance.
Runner-up in the Tertiary Student Project category was the Distributed Services Management Systems group, and is a software project developed by a team of five tertiary students from the University of Tasmania. As an APICTA finalist, the group developed an online job tracking system that provides an efficient way for business to create, manage and track job requests.
Also runner-up was TrustDefender, who provides online transaction security solutions for the consumer, enterprise or merchant in the financial services sector. The software authenticates the security health status of the end user computer whilst extending beyond the security of the business environment.
Other Australian APICTA finalists included NetCat, Senetas, Synetek Systems, Year 12 student Trang Phan from Smithfield State High School, Pikistrips.com, NICTA, Open Kernel Labs and Sensear.

Sheryle Moon's travel diary - APICTA 2007
As a part of the Australian contingent making the annual trek to APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Awards), I arrived on Saturday excited to see what the best ICT companies across the Asia Pacific region had to offer.
Having become accustomed to the dry heat of Canberra’s summer, Singapore was a direct contrast. It was early monsoon season and very steamy. It rained every day, buckets of rain - the sort of thing we haven’t seen here for a while.
